Advent Journal

As the days continue to grow shorter and we settle into Winter, our focus turns towards the coming light of Christ’s birth. This year Open Table invites you to engage the Advent season with creativity and an eye toward seeking God outside the lines.

Based on Keri Smith’s Wreck This Journal we hope you will join us as we use daily activities to discover where we are being called this Advent and Christmas season. Simple instructions tap into our often ignored creative side as we draw, cut, glue, write and collect our way to Epiphany. This all-ages journal can be used individually or as a family. Our littlest friends might need some help and occasionally adult supervision. This journal is meant to be wrecked, as you may be able to tell from the title. The instructions may seem odd, but think outside the box and allow yourself to be surprised by where you are led! Have fun with it! Be open to finding renewal and new birth in unexpected places.

Download and print this prepared journal. Double-sided is best, but if that isn’t available, you can get creative on day 2 when you are prompted to bind the journal. If you can’t print the journal pages, use a notebook or journal that you already have to create your daily meditation using the PDF as a guide. If you run into problems, send us an email. We hope that this practice can be a new way to engage with the creative, moving spirit within each of us.

Thank you for the opportunity with structure to help nurture a bit of my creative side. This is helpful in that I also just joined in AMOK, another arts community. I have printed the journal in 8 1/2 by 11 single pages and some doubly so to accommodate the suggestion.

  2. This is so very creative, inspiring, and uplifting!! Thanks!
